Research Notes
Genes Reunited checked for Richard and Mary
Mary Hocking is a bit of a worry
LDS has a composite record birth abt 1708 of St Agnes, Chr 28 Sep 1710 Altarnun,
Cornwall marrying
Richard Clemence 12 Nov 1731 Redruth
Other simpler records have her marrying in Redruth (not at issue) born
in Redruth and/or "Of St Agnes"
FHO has two baptisms 28 Sep 1710 Altarnun, parents
Richard and Joan Hocking
and
15 Dec 1711
Redruth St Uny, parents Andrew and Honora Hocking
Altarnun is about 70 miles east of St Agnes, and Redruth is 6 miles
south of St Agnes.
FHO has the Redruth marriage with no mention of Altarnun
Conclusion : The Altarnun entry is a wrong guess by someone entering
the data into LDS
Richard Clemence has several vague birth
entries in the LDS, but nothing useful. Nothing in FHO. OPC online
database does not have a baptism for Richard..
Query was sent to
the OPC
for St Agnes, Janice Brooker, who came back with the following
I regret that
I don't have the parish registers for this date.
I do have an index
to all marriages from 1596 - 1837 and extracted the following Clem*
marriages which I hope will be of interest:
John Clemence = [no
name recorded] 7 Aug 1675
Nicholas Jenkin =
Dorcas Clemens 28
Dec 1697
Arthur Trebarfat =
Blanch Clemens 17
Feb 1712
That John Clemence entry
is quite encouraging. John is a common name, but the timing is about
right, and they did call their first son John. Score him about 50%?
