Joshua and Mary's Story

Joshua junior very considerately gave his mother's maiden name when he married Jane Batty in1903. This enables us to find his parent's wedding in Kirkheaton in 1831. (Kirkheaton is two Miles E of central Huddersfield). On census returns, Joshua senior is pretty consistent with his story - born about 1805 in Huddersfield. Mary comes from Alverthorpe, which appears to be a suburb of Wakefield, about twelve miles E of  Huddersfield. her year of birth varies between 1808 and 1810. Joshua worked as a Whitesmith*, as did two of their sons. Joshua and Mary moved to Newcastle-on-Tyne between the 1851 census and the 1861 census. The last we know of them, they are living in Newcastle-on-Tyne in their sixties in the 1871 census.
*A whitesmith is a person who works with white or light-colored metal (such as tin) and does finish work, such as filing and/or polishing, on iron to remove black oxides. Whitesmith can also refer to the person who polishes or finishes the metal rather than forging it. - Wikipedia

This looks like an earlier Joshua Turner/Whitesmith, as it is hard to imagine Joshua (b dec 1805) in the 1922 trades directory, and suggests Joshua and Nanny are the correct parents
