John and Thirza's Story

John was born 1819 in South Newton Wiltshire. Thirza was born in in 1824 Winterbourne Dauntsey, very close to Winterbourne Earls.
The couple were married in Winterbourne Dauntsey in 1845 and lived in Winterbourne Earles till at least 1856 probably 1859.
John died in the July to September quarter 1868. The death was registered in the district of Wilton. The town of Wilton is three miles west of Salisbury, so he probably died in Winterbourne Earls.
Thirza and the four girls arrived in Melbourne 1st July 1869 to join Elias who came out four years earlier.
In the 1871 census, Sydney is working as a groom for Jonathan and Elina Gray, in Backwell, Parish of Bath and Wells, Somerset. The couple had a household if six servants for the two of them.
Sydney arrived on the Northumberland in Nov 1875. Sydney married in Melbourne in 1879.
Thirza died in 1890 aged 66, having seen four of her children married in Melbourne.
Thirza's family can be traced back via church records in Winterbourne Earles to the late 1500s
John's family can be traced back in Wiltshire and Devon to the late 17th century

Arrival in Melbourne

From Roy Smalley
Arrived Melbourne 1 July 1869. The four girls and Emily came to Australia. On the same ship was John Marshall (aged 20) and some Davis's.
From: Robyn Lanham
On the National Library index and genealogy database I found  a Thirza, Mary, Elizabeth,  Agnes,  and Emily Marshall  arrive on the ship Somersetshire  Aug 1869 fiche 286, pg 207( no Elias or Sidney).
Les Rowley:
Intriguingly on the Somersetshire in Feb, there is a John Marshall who is exactly the right age to be John Josiah. But he died in 1868?

Elias Marshall

Quoting an email from Kathy Smalley
I have the death cert for Elias MARSHALL, son of Thirza Davies and John Marshall. From the death cert, (information supplied by his wife Ellen Louisa) Elias immigrated into NSW 1866 and 4 years later, he came to Victoria. He is buried at Melbourne Cemetery. There is a record of an Elias Marshall arriving into NSW 1865 on the St Hilda, aged 19. as an assisted immigrant. Ages and time compute, so this may be him.
The St Hilda Elias looks very probable (LR)
