An email pointed me to an interesting Wikitree page managed by Margie Partridge. This family is beautifully covered and I would highly recommend going to the family page Francis and Mary Hawkins
This page has links to a page for each of the children and I would recomment these also
A crude summary follows

Francis Hawkins
Born
about 1779 in Drum, County Roscommon, Ireland. Married Mary in Cork Ireland
Joined the 5th Dragoon Guards and served for 20 years until discharged with the complaint "worn out" at the age of 43 years. On 12 September 1821 he became a Royal Chelsea Pensioner receiving a pension rate of 9 shillings until his death on 30th May 1847 aged 68 years
(I have been unable to verify but suspect this rate was weekly)

Children

Ellen (b about 1819 Ireland, m William Godfrey 1840, d 1854 Leeds)
The 1851 Census records Ellen's two eldest sons Thomas (10 yrs) and James (8 yrs) as pauper inmate scholars of the Moral and Industrial Training School for the Pauper Children of the Township of Leeds. Young James would be dead three years later.
Jane (b 1821)
1835 (13 yrs old) Leeds, imprisoned two months and kept to hard labour for stealing a silver watch 1837 (15 yrs old) Leeds, transported 7 Years: for stealing a shawl
Elizabeth (b 1823 Leeds)
1835 Elizabeth was 12 years old when she was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment for the theft of five silk handkerchiefs.
1837 Elizabeth’s second offence committed at age 15 years was stealing a pair of womens boots for which she was sentenced to 7 years transportation

Not much is known about the last four children
Mary (b 1826)
Francis (b 1827)
Hannah (b 1829)
George (b 1832)

There is obvious desparation following Francis' retirement from the army. What chance did our Jane have?

Comments Les Rowley
Ancestry has two records for Jane Hawkins daughter of Frances and Mary, but they surely are the sams Jane
Jane Hawkins 12 Aug 1821 St Marys Lady Lane (Catholic) Chapel, Leeds
12 Aug 1821 Saint Patricks York Road-Roman Catholic, Leeds

One possibility is that we have two fsmilies here
Supporting this
It avoids having children Frances and Francis in the one family
It avoids the birth of the children spanning 24 years in one family
The second family now has the firstborn son named after the father (common practice)

The failure to find any of the family in the 1841 or 1851 census databases is a bit disconcerting - with the information we have, I would expect to find them.
