The interesting question of Wooler

Wooler is a small town 47 miles NNW from Newcastle on Tyne. Current population is about 2,000.  Yet we find Thomas Thompson marring a girl from there in 1825. In later years Thompson children  are stayin with the Rule family in three censuses. In fact it looks as if two of the Thomas Thompson family are working there. They are working as Slaters for John Rule. John is employing 8 or 9 people. How does a small town support an enterprise of this scale?
Glendale is a valley consisting of two sub-districts, Wooler and Ford
