Tracing my lineage
back up my tree I am comfortable
to say that my 8x great grandparents are Robert Chilcott and
Joan Fulbroke.
Taking a completely different view by
tracing down my potential family
tree, I have traced the Plantagenet and Arscott lines down to
George Chilcott (of Stogumber) and Frances Arscott. I can also
say that George and Frances had a son, William, (this was
found in The Visitation of the County of Somerset in
1623 at https://books.google.com.au/books?id=paXRXTR6SXAC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false
on page 22) and shows that William was aged 8 in 1623, thus
making his DOB circa 1615
I am assuming the "aet. 8" next to
William's name is telling us he was approximately 8 years old.
This being the case, William was born circa 1615. As George is
shown as "of Stogumber", it is most likely that William was
born at Stogumber. Unfortunately, the baptism records from
Stogumber for the period 1603-1615 do not seem to have
survived and I have been unable to find any other Somerset
baptism record for William.
So I think I am missing evidence to support
just a single generation:
- The child of George Chilcott and
Frances Arscot being William Chilcott;
- And this William
Chilcott being the father of Robert
Chilcott.
A lot of people have
claimed this William Chilcott married Mabella Bragge, but I am
not convinced. I am happy to say that a
William Chilcott did indeed marry Mabella Bragge and that they
had a son named Robert Chilcott. The facts I am using to say
this are as follows:
- William made his Will on 20 July 1643
and it tells us:
- He was living at Bridey (probably
Bridport), Dorset.
- His wife is Mabella.
- His children are William, Robert,
Mabella and Thomasin.
- Mabella was previously married to
someone Every and they had a daughter, Elizabeth Every.
- William's brother-in-law is John
Bragg and so we know Mabella's maiden name was Bragg.
- Mabella Bragge married Alexander
Every on 26 February 1626 at Thorncombe, Dorset.
- Alexander Every was buried 27 May
1633 at Whitechurch Canonicorum, Dorset.
- William Chilcott married Mabella
Every (nee Bragge), but I don't know when and where.
- William died in 1650 in Dorset.
So the two links I am
missing are:
- A birth / baptism record of some
description for William Chilcott to George and Frances
Chilcott (nee Arscott).
- A birth / baptism record of some
description for Robert Chilcott to William and Mabella
Chilcott (nee Bragge).

I have read Joan Chilcott's Will many
times, trying to work out what it is saying. As you know she
goes on for great lengths about the Bryants and only refers to
William, Christopher, Robert and Eleanor (daughter of
Christopher) Chilcott in very fleeting terms. I really do
think these Chilcotts are "ours", but I don't think Joan is
their mother - perhaps an aunt. Surely if Joan was their
mother they would have been bequeathed much more than five
pounds.
And if the above is the case, then
Robert Chilcott, husband of Joan, is not the father of "our"
Rev. Christopher Chilcott.
I am very comfortable claiming
Christopher Chilcott and Hannah Langford as my 7x great
grandparents and from Christopher's university records we know
his father was Robert from Beaminster, Dorset.
So what do we know about Robert Chilcott
of Beaminster?
- We have a burial record for a Robert
Chilcott on 22 May 1686 at Beaminster, Dorset.
- We have a Will for a Robert Chilcott
dated 25 August 1683 telling us that he lived at Bridport,
Dorset.
- Bridport and Beaminster are only 10km
apart and so the Will and the burial record could be for the
same Robert Chilcott.
- Robert's Will:
- Gives ample evidence to support his
wife being Joan Fulbroke.
- Tells us he has a brother named
William and this William has a son, also named William.
- Tells us he has a niece named Mary
Simes.
- Makes no mention of him having any
children.
- We have a burial record for a Joan
Chilcott on 30 July 1707 at Beaminster, Dorset.
- Joan Chilcott's Will dated 18 June
1707:
- Tells us she was from Beaminster,
Dorset.
- Tells us she was a widow - Robert
was buried in 1686 at Beaminster, Dorset, so this gels.
- Bequeathed:
- Five pounds apiece to William
Chilcott and his wife Susannah.
- Five pounds to Robert Chilcott of
Beaminster.
- Five pounds to Christopher
Chilcott of Tintagel, Cornwall. We know that Christopher
Chilcott was the vicar of Tintagel at this time.
- 20 shillings to Elionor Chilcott,
daughter of Christopher Chilcott.
- 200 pounds to Weary Bryant,
daughter of George Bryant.
- 100 pounds to George Bryant, son
of George Bryant.
- 300 pounds to William Chycroft
and his wife Susannah.
- 20 pounds Airo Prossitor, wife of
Thomas Prossitor of Chedington, Dorset.
- 20 shillings each to Arthur
Clift, shoemaker of Beaminster and his sons William and
Joseph.
- 20 shillings each to William
Cloift of Netherbury, Dorset and his son William.
- 20 shillings each to Elexander
Gibbs, clothier of Crows???, Somerset and to ??? wife of
Thomas ???, butcher of ???
- George Bryant receives an annuity
(paid by William Chilcott) and the bulk of the rest of
Joan's goods and chattels.
So I have great concerns about linking
Rev Christopher Chilcott to Robert and Joan Chilcott (nee
Fulbroke). Unless, of course, you have something that I haven't
yet come across.
